The past tense is a verb tense expressing
action, activity, state or being in the past of the curent moment (in a
absolute tense system), or prior to some other event, whether that is
past, present, or future (in a relative tense system).
Patterns:
Using be : (subject + was/where + complement)
Using verb : (subject + Vpast + complement)
The function of the past tense:
To express that an action started and finished at a specific time in
the past. Sometimes, the speaker may not actually mention the specific
time, but they do have one specific time in mind. See the previous
examples.
To describe a habit which stopped in the past. To make it clear that
we are talking about a habbit, we often add expressions such as:
always, often, usually, never, when I was a child, when I was younger,
etc.
Examples:
I always say a night fare when I was a child.
Did you love flying kites when you were a kid?
To describe past facts or generalizations which are no longer true.
Examples:
Lisa was introvert as a child, but now she is extrovert.
Grandpa didn’t like coffe before.
The adverbs that are usually used in the past tense sentences are:
Yesterday
Last...
This morning
Last week
… ago
A few minutes ago
Just now
